Now that would be something to be thankful for…

Hillary Clinton’s margin of victory in presidential voting.*

No matter what the empty talking heads, right wing pundits and Republican politicians want you to believe, never, ever forget the following facts:

  • Donald Trump did not receive a majority of the votes in 2016. [Update 12/1: he received 46.3% of the votes. That is a “mandate” only to be found in alternative universes and comic books. Sadly, Mr. Trump has gone back to twitter to say he would have won the popular vote if he wanted to, but then decided it was easier to say that the election was rigged and perpetuate the myth of voter fraud.]
  • The country is not turning away from Obama’s policies, even if they are frustrated with how the economy is going for them. [Update 12/21: Clinton has now received more votes than any man besides President Obama and trails 2012 Obama by 71,185 votes.]
  • The vast majority of the people — even people in the Republican party — agree with the Democrats on issues like climate change, women’s reproductive rights, social security and medicare, income inequality, wasteful defense spending, same sex marriage, womens’ equal pay, a living wage, and many, many more.

[Update, December 21: We’re up to over a 2 million vote margin. Hillary is 2.1% ahead, 48.2%-46.1%. I hope people will never use the word “mandate” again in reference to this or any election. The country is too divided to ever consider these results to be a clear cut victory. A mandate is when LBJ won 61.1% of the vote over Goldwater, or Reagan won 58.7% of the vote against Mondale. When you add that to the way the Republicans have rigged the House of Representatives (gerrymandering, voting suppression laws, etc) so that they controlled 53% of the House seats, while only receiving 47% of the total votes across the country in 2012, we are truly dealing with a tyranny of the minority. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!]
