Anthony, you certainly hit a chord with thousands of people. I never read the book as a kid, and never read it to my kids, so I wanted to give you a few objective observations:
First, Medium was swept by another emotional wave at the beginning of last year. But the writer had a completely different take on the book:
The Kid in “The Giving Tree” is a Dick
A.k.a How Shel Silverstein prepared us for crappy relationships
I didn’t realize The Giving Tree was so controversial. It’s starting to rival The Bible in the number of interpretations, both sentimental and cynical, inspirational and self-mocking. We’ve got feminists, 12-steppers, buddhists, children’s advocates, and even public servants deconstructing the book beyond all recognition.
Secondly, as the self-proclaimed resident quasi-pseudo-Buddhist expert in these parts, I presented a fair and balanced approach to the book that may illuminate (or shock) your readers:
Finally, I must request the payment of royalties for your line “We are both the boy and the tree,” which uses a form of this trademarked tagline I wrote last May:
I think 10% is a reasonable sum, so please deposit 95 ❤ (your ❤ totals, as of this writing) into the story that introduced the above tagline:
To write or not to write… that is the question
A philosophical discussion of internal vs external validation
I’m sure your error was completely innocent, so I would like to thank you in advance for your show of good faith.
No one wants to waste the time and expense involved in bringing a copyright infringement case to the courts. And you certainly want to avoid this web site’s arbitration app, as it is presided over by my good friend, the Tribune of Medium, Gutbloom.
