Because they’re tasty? (sorry couldn’t resist that set up).
Seriously, the problem with acts of violence that end in suicide (whether self detonation, or death by police) is that you are trying to apply rational thinking to someone who is not rational.
I’m not going to go into any depth here — you can research this stuff yourself — but there are a few factors to consider:
- Islam was the most advanced religion in the world at the time of the Crusades. Religious tolerance marked that era.
- The Arab world was markedly ahead of Europe during the Middle Ages in terms of mathematics and science.
- Something happened in Islam at around the time of the Enlightenment where the relationship between religion and science completely reversed, compared to the Christian world.
In addition to the poverty and violence in the daily lives of people in the Middle East, there is some fundamental shift in their religion that has created a huge gap between the cultures. Even among non-violent Muslims in the Middle East, their treatment of women is barbaric but accepted.
While Muslims living here are assimilated into Western society, those individuals who send financial aid back to the middle east are providing tacit support to extremism. It is no different from our history of Irish Americans supporting the IRA.
