  • Past performance does not guarantee future results.
  • Individual results may vary, and testimonials are not claimed to represent typical results.
  • Ask your writing coach or therapist if online writing advice, hacks to increase readership, and other assorted snake oil salesman offers are right for you.
  • Side effects are common and may include loss of self-esteem, depression, increased ranting, obsessive clicking of the Medium Partner Program button (even when you’re not next to an electronic device), and lower IQ due to thinking about how to write on a sixth-grade level at all times.
  • If you are too impatient to get to the answer in the headline above, you’re missing the point of reading. As Steven King wrote in his book on writing, “reading is the creative center of a writer’s life… you cannot hope to sweep someone else away by the force of your writing until it has been done to you.” Please spend an extra minute or two with me. I have a broom.

1. What is bigger than NBA players playing in the Finals, dirtier than The Dirty Dozen, and only slightly less magnificent than the Magnificent Seven?

It’s you, dear fans, the members of my email list!

First let me say there is no doubt you are dirtier than the Dirty Dozen, based on your “colorful” language (not the fact that you may or may not be convicted murderers willing to go on a suicide mission against a maniacal tyrant with a penchant for invading other countries).¹²

I’m not sure I should include Michael Burg, MD in the group because he put asterisks and misspelled curse words in his latest rant. But we are not the first to add curse words to a headline or book title.

That honor goes to the “content creator” (the real obscenity in my view) responsible for that treasure trove of self-help gruel, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good
