Jon, I agree that blind positivity without proper planning or incisive decision making is mind numbingly stupid.

But there’s a huge difference between Branson’s advice and the other two. Branson is talking something real that is going to take a ton of work to deliver; the others are just open-ended platitudes.

When we have opportunities to expand ourselves in any human activity — new job, the girlfriend you think is out of your league, stretching to buy that first house — there is a ton of fear and more than likely the feeling that you are an imposter who could never pull it off.

Acting “as if” is one of the oldest peak performance techniques used by actors and athletes, salesmen and statesmen. It’s something that every start-up, entry level employee and independent contractor needs to be able do to get their foot in the door.
