Simmons and Embiid are on a higher plane than Tatum.
Regular season Tatum will be an All-Star, but after watching him disappear against the Lakers and the Warriors during their west coast road trips, he doesn’t do any one thing better than everyone else, which you need to become a transcendent player. Playoff Tatum, on the other hand, is a function of Brad Stevens, just like every guard putting up career numbers in Mike D’Antoni’s systems.
I don’t know how to pick between Simmons and Embiid, because both have serious questions about their games that may prevent one or both of them from becoming the dominant player of their generation. Can Simmons ever learn to shoot? Can Embiid improve his conditioning so he can dominate a must win playoff game over the course of 40 minutes?
From what I’ve seen this year, Simmons looks like a bigger version of Jason Kidd, while Embiid looks like a more fragile version of Hakim Olajuwon.
It’s a tough pick, but I give Embiid just the slightest edge.
