Elizabeth, there’s this basic human instinct that when we see others from our “tribe” — in this case, Medium users — we assume they aren’t cannibals, Viking raiders, aliens, or cocker spaniels with a really bad attitude. I have the same feeling reading troll comments as I did when I saw crowds at GOP candidate debates boo a gay soldier, cheer the thought of letting a sick person die or chanting “lock her up.”

I still hold on to a shred of belief in basic human decency and the ideals contained in the Constitution. But it took eight years for my conservative friends to get even an inkling of the idea that Bush and Cheney were an absolute disaster for this country.

I have reduced my news intake by half. I make a conscious effort to turn off anything where I hear the Liar-in-Chief’s voice. And the only Sean Spicer announcements I watch are on SNL.

I spent eight years being angry and depressed about the damage caused by Bush and Cheney, so I promised myself and my family that I would do everything I could to resist wasting the next four years by reacting to the goons and loons in control of the government, or the fools who drool all over the internet.

I hope you can turn your righteous fury into positive action. That’s our only alternative.

Courage.

P.S.: Just saw this article in my feed that says it far better than me:
