This was the Raptors last year, multiplied by 10. The Raptors went all in, because the alternative was a complete rebuild. Also, their window closes after next season when all those old players become free agents.

The rewards for the Lakers — instant title contenders, and a five-year window with Leonard and Davis in their primes — were far too great.

The front office made the right play, and they’ve actually looked competent by keeping their mouths shut (except for Magic’s personal call).

It will hurt if the Lakers don’t get Kawhi, but this is far from the shit show of the Davis trade debacle, the inability to hire Tyron Lue, or bringing in Jason Kidd to the coaching staff.

LeBron and Klutch will cobble together a roster that will change throughout the season. As long as the Lakers look like a strong playoff team, there will be some buy-out guys at the end of the season who will find their way back to the team, in addition to KCP (not really terrible) and Rondo (terrible until the playoffs). Alex Caruso is a decent back up point guard, and Johnathan Williams is a small mobile center.
